Overview

Jointly established by Tsinghua University (THU) and the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) with the support of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) is committed to exploring modes of cultivating "university-government-enterprise" tripartite cooperation according to the concepts of "interdisciplinary", "internationalization" and "industrial partnership". By integrating university, government and industry resources, and training global technology leaders and future entrepreneurs, TBSI aims to solve major regional and global issues in engineering and scientific research, and cultivate high-quality talents.

Officially launched on March 29 2019, Tsinghua SIGS is Jointly founded by Tsinghua University and the Shenzhen Municipal Government, a further expansion of the Tsinghua Graduate School at Shenzhen and the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute. SIGS aims at bringing together world-class faculty members and postgraduate students, tackling global challenges through cutting-edge research and international collaborations, nurturing the next generations of global leaders. SIGS is committed to serving economic and social development in Shenzhen, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, and beyond.

Our Programs

After signing an agreement, THU and UC Berkeley launched their dual degree program in Fall of 2016. Students who meet the admissions requirements of THU and UC Berkeley have a chance to receive dual master's degrees from both THU (in Environmental Science & New Energy, Data Science & Information Technology and Precision Medicine & Healthcare) and UC Berkeley (in Engineering Leadership) within two and a half to three years.

TBSI has started with 3 trans-disciplinary research centers and 18 laboratories in the following areas: (1) Environmental Science & New Energy Technology, (2) Data Science & Information Technology, and (3) Precision Medicine & Healthcare. As the Institute develops, more trans-disciplinary academic areas will be covered.

Our Faculty

Faculty Team: TBSI brings together a world-leading team of teachers, with one third from THU, one third from UC Berkeley and the remaining third consisting of high-quality teachers from around the world.

Co-Advisors: TBSI adopts a co-advising scheme in which faculty members from both Tsinghua and Berkeley form co-advisor groups to provide students with guidance on educational objectives, educational models, study plans, papers and theses, industrial internships and so on.

Industry Advisors: TBSI has established an Industrial Advisory Board with members including such high-tech enterprises as Tencent, Huawei, Siemens, DJI Innovations, BYD Auto, ZTE Corporation, Cisco and so on. Students can benefit from these university-industry partnerships with regard to their research and career development.

External Advisory Board: The academic programs and research development of TBSI are guided by an External Advisory Board (EAB) consisting of renowned academic leaders from international universities and institutes, including a Nobel Prize Laureate, Turing Award Recipient and famous Academicians. EAB members include Steven Chu (1997 Nobel Prize Laureate，Stanford University), David Patterson (2018 Turing Award Recipient, UC Berkeley), Eric Grimson (MIT Chancellor for Academics Advancement)，Kenichi Iga (Former President, Tokyo Institute of Technology), Ilesanmi Adesida (Provost, Nazarbayev University), Max Lu (President, Surrey University), Leonidas Guibas (Stanford University), Chenming Hu (UC Berkeley), Tsu-Jae King Liu (Vice Provost, Dean of Engineering School, UC Berkeley), Fiona M. Doyle (Dean of Graduate Division, UC Berkeley).

Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute accepts bachelor degree holders to pursue doctoral degrees.  Bachelor degree holders for doctoral program application must meet all the standard requirements of the university, as well as the requirements of this school listed below:

1. The Minimum Requirement of Undergraduate GPA or Average scores:3.0/4 ；

2. Applicants of this school can be exempt from the HSK certificates, however, non-native English Speakers must meet the minimum English proficiency requirement: TOEFL no less than 90 for the internet-based test (iBT);IELTS no less than 7.0 overall band score;Old GRE no less than 1300;New GRE 310;GMAT no less than 675;China College English Test (CET) Band 6 no less than 500;Tsinghua English Proficiency Test (TEPT) Level I:Pass;
If you cannot meet the above requirements but graduated from institutions adopt English as the medium of instruction covering at least 3 years for Bachelor’s Programs , please contact our Admission Office for review.
