To Whom It May Concern, I take great pleasure to offer this reference to voice my strong support of Taylor Loeb’s application to your program. My name is Wu Xun, Program Manager for Teach for China fellows in the Heqing region of Dali, Yunnan, P. R. China. In this capacity, I have worked as Taylor’s direct supervisor for the 2014-2015 school year, during which I am lucky enough to witness him bringing an extraordinary amount of passion to his work as an English teacher at Sanzhuang Elementary School. Among all of Taylor’s strengths, his persistent pursuit of excellence has impressed me the most. Under the circumstances that many students at Sanzhuang Elementary School, a remote rural school, have limited English exposure and weak study motivation and learning habits, Taylor spares no effort in changing the adverse situation and bringing positive influence on his students. He constantly reflects on and analyzes the problems he faces and figures out ways to tackle them. For instance, classroom management has always been a very strenuous challenge for novice teachers to get past. Knowing this, Taylor would watch recordings of his class over and over again to find out what went wrong. He would also talk to his students after class to get to know thoughts on their end. Then he would proactively communicate with teachers within and outside of his school, and utilize on-line resources and learning gatherings to seek advice. Due to his undefeatable determination and consistent effort, he found a useful way to cultivate a welcoming classroom environment which motivates his students and improves their learning results. Our program brings together a group of finest young people in China, among whom Taylor’s excellence is not concealed. Furthermore, I’ve found Taylor a strong team player. While many teachers struggle with adapting to the unfamiliar lifestyle of rural China, Taylor has exemplified a much different trajectory. He worked with co-workers to design and deliver highly-appreciated training sessions such as culture in language teaching and classroom management to English teachers. According to feedbacks on these presentations, quite a number of teachers in our organization were impressed by Taylor’s sharing and decided to include the skills in their own teaching, which reflects the positive influence Taylor has on his co-workers. He was also a member of our team newsletter editing group. His writing talents and his good team spirit contributed a lot to the making of our team newsletter. Other than this, he built good relationships with students and other teachers and was known throughout his school and the greater local community as a positive influence in both education and daily life. One of the most vital characteristics of a successful Teach for China teacher is the ability to overcome and adapt. Our teachers begin with little to no teaching experience and are placed in entirely foreign environments. But Taylor has been able to overcome hardships of inexperience in the classroom and exceed expectations. Additionally, He has blended seamlessly into life and work atmospheres utterly unlike any past experience. These two crucial characteristics—the abilities to overcome and adapt—are unmistakably present in Taylor and I trust they will follow him in his post-Teach for China life. Therefore, I would highly recommend Taylor Loeb for your program, where his persistent pursuit of excellence, team spirit, and the ability to overcome and adapt, will be brought into full play.
